The Oregon, Washington, and Northern Idaho Association (OWNI) was founded in 1976 by Herefords breeders from these areas. The goal of the Association was to better serve Hereford Breeders to assist in the overall Hereford promotion and merchandising for the betterment of the breed. Today, the goal of the Association remains basically the same with the addition of educating people, especially youth, to the merits of Hereford cattle. The Association has approximately 45 members through out the 3 states.
In 2009, the first bull sale known as the Northwest Hereford Breeders Bull Sale was held at the Northwest Livestock Commission in Hermiston, OR. Each year, we have offered approximately 70 bulls, including performance-tested yearling bulls (late fall and early spring), 2 year-old and halter bulls. The yearling bulls are developed on a 100 day, roughage-based diet for ADG comparison within their contemporary group. The performance testing is completed at Top Cut Feedlot in Hermiston, OR under the direction of Walt Sullivan. The sale is held the first Thursday in March each year.
OWNI, in order to promote Hereford cattle to the youth, offer a cash award of $100 to champion or reserve champion purebred Hereford steer from any terminal show held in Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho area. Advance notice of exhibiting your steer is requested. The entry form is listed under Youth Activities on the OWNI web site.
